When Erin arrived back at the flat after dropping Oliver off, she bustled around plumping couch cushions and polishing the leaves of her house plants while singing show tunes from West End Story under her breath. The bad feeling Zara had been nursing increased in depth and width. Something had obviously happened to inject Erin with energy but what?

She leaned against the lounge doorjamb, watching her. ‘You were gone for a while. Did Oliver give you the wrong directions?’ she asked casually.

Erin jumped like a startled cat at his name and flushed bright red.

‘No, he got back OK. There was just a bit of Sunday traffic.’ She quickly looked down at the dark green plant on the windowsill that she was studiously polishing. Its leaves were now so shiny they reflected the sky outside.

‘Did something happen though?’ persisted Zara. ‘You’re acting odd.’

Erin cleared her throat. ‘I, ah ... and I hope you don’t mind ... but I may have asked him out. On a date.’

Zara pressed her lips together. Dammit. ‘Did he say yes?’ She hoped Oliver had thought it was too weird and had declined the offer.

‘He did, actually,’ said Erin, a touch defensively. ‘We haven’t arranged it yet, but I thought maybe ... a midweek drink.’

‘Oh—cool.’ Zara tried to smile but it must’ve not quite reached her eyes.

‘You’re pissed off,’ said Erin looking deflated. ‘Because he’s your client. I’m really sorry. He just seemed nice. And I asked if he was seeing anyone. He said no.’

Zara rubbed her hand tiredly over her face. Her ankle was starting to ache again—she needed to ice it and wrap it before work tomorrow. She went into the kitchen to raid the freezer, with Erin following her, looking guilty.

‘There isn’t anything going on with the two of you, is there?’

‘Of course not,’ said Zara sharply. ‘He’s a client. Honestly, it’s fine that you asked him. And yes, he is a nice guy.’

She yanked the ice tray out of the freezer with more force than necessary. Maybe nothing would happen. They’d just go on one date, find out they had nothing in common and that would be it. Over and done with. And they could all move on with their lives.
