When Erin arrived back at the flat after dropping Oliver off, she bustled around plumping couch cushions and polishing the leaves of her house plants while singing show tunes from West End Story under her breath. The bad feeling Zara had been nursing increased in depth and width. Something had obviously happened to inject Erin with energy but what?
She leaned against the lounge doorjamb, watching her. âYou were gone for a while. Did Oliver give you the wrong directions?â she asked casually.
Erin jumped like a startled cat at his name and flushed bright red.
âNo, he got back OK. There was just a bit of Sunday traffic.â She quickly looked down at the dark green plant on the windowsill that she was studiously polishing. Its leaves were now so shiny they reflected the sky outside.
âDid something happen though?â persisted Zara. âYouâre acting odd.â
Erin cleared her throat. âI, ah ... and I hope you donât mind ... but I may have asked him out. On a date.â
Zara pressed her lips together. Dammit. âDid he say yes?â She hoped Oliver had thought it was too weird and had declined the offer.
âHe did, actually,â said Erin, a touch defensively. âWe havenât arranged it yet, but I thought maybe ... a midweek drink.â
âOhâcool.â Zara tried to smile but it mustâve not quite reached her eyes.
âYouâre pissed off,â said Erin looking deflated. âBecause heâs your client. Iâm really sorry. He just seemed nice. And I asked if he was seeing anyone. He said no.â
Zara rubbed her hand tiredly over her face. Her ankle was starting to ache againâshe needed to ice it and wrap it before work tomorrow. She went into the kitchen to raid the freezer, with Erin following her, looking guilty.
âThere isnât anything going on with the two of you, is there?â
âOf course not,â said Zara sharply. âHeâs a client. Honestly, itâs fine that you asked him. And yes, he is a nice guy.â
She yanked the ice tray out of the freezer with more force than necessary. Maybe nothing would happen. Theyâd just go on one date, find out they had nothing in common and that would be it. Over and done with. And they could all move on with their lives.
